North Carolina Court Closures Extend…Again

Chief Supreme Court Justice Cheri Beasley ordered courts in North Carolina to postpone all jury trials until August

Also, the highest state court official ordered some new deadlines for court matters extended through the end of July.

“Until this public health threat has passed it cannot be business as usual,” Beasley said.

Obviously, not all court proceedings are shutdown. Beasley said the state’s courts have still handled roughly 20,000 cases since the shutdown. However, this is unprecedented and you really have to wonder how long its going to take to clear up the backlog once the courts open back up. When this all started I asked some of my attorney friends about the right to a speedy trial. They somewhat joked that speedy was a subjective term. Little did they know.
