Morning Call: It Gets Worse in the 9th

Yesterday was a cornucopia of news from the 9th district in North Carolina.

It started with WSOC’s Joe Bruno who reported that two women had come forward to say they had been paid to pick up ballots, “A second woman Channel 9 spoke with on Tuesday said she was paid by an electioneer in Bladen County to pick up absentee ballots in the U.S. House District 9 race.  Cheryl Kinlaw said she was paid $100 by McCrae Dowless to pick up the ballots.”

Bruno went on to tweet that the second woman he talked to said she didn’t mail the ballots in and she gave them to McCrae Dowless. She doesn’t know what he did with them afterward.

A few hours later, Nick Ochsner of WBTV uncovered another absentee ballot mill for another Bladen county race.

Ochsner wrote, “Handwritten notes obtained by WBTV suggest a second person ran an operation focused on absentee ballots in Bladen County in the 2018 primary election.  The notes came from two people who collected the sheet of paper after a meeting on April 8, 2018 to discuss efforts in the primary race for Bladen County Sheriff.”

Early this afternoon Andy Specht of the News & Observer analyzed data from a document dump from the state board of elections.

Specht tweeted, “McCrae Dowless issued more than 575 absentee ballot requests in Bladen County.  For context, there were only 684 absentee by-mail ballots cast in Bladen County.  420 were for @MarkHarrisNC9.”

And finally late last night, Jim Sciutto of CNN tweeted this, “Breaking on NC-9 Congressional race: Criminal investigation underway into voting irregularities in Bladen Cty North Carolina, says local DA. The investigation was initially centered on the 2016 election cycle, but now includes the 2018 election as well.”

“Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.”
