Now that all the craziness in Florida has wrapped up, the eyes of the nation turn to North Carolina.

On Saturday, once again, the state Board of Elections declined to certify the results of the 9th congressional district race…

Instead of certifying the results, the BOE is going to hold a hearing.  The News & Observer explains, “The board’s evidentiary hearing is due “to claims of numerous irregularities and concerted fraudulent activities related to absentee mail ballots” and “to assure that the election is determined without taint of fraud or corruption and without irregularities that may have changed the result of an election,” said Joshua Malcolm, vice chairman of the North Carolina State Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement.”

The vote was 7-2.

The national media got wind of the mess late last week and started chiming in this weekend.  The conclusions are not good for Mark Harris.

FiveThirtyEight’s Nathaniel Rakich says the numbers show something unusual, “In six of the district’s eight counties, fewer than 3 percent of total votes were absentee-by-mail ballots. But in Bladen County, that number was 7.3 percent, suggesting a push to get people there to vote by mail. Absentee-by-mail ballots tended to be much better for McCready than other ballots — except in Bladen County. There, absentee-by-mail ballots were more Republican-leaning than the rest of Bladen’s votes by 8 percentage points. But if we look at the whole district, absentee-by-mail ballots were 24 points more Democratic-leaning.”

Jeff B at Decision Desk HQ also thinks things look sketchy, “The more I delve into it, the more plausible I find it that there were indeed some dirty deeds done not-that-cheap in the NC-09 race on Mark Harris’s side, both in the primary race where he defeated incumbent Bob Pittenger and in the general election vs. McCready.”

So what are the allegations?  The biggest concern is that an individual who worked for the Harris campaign coordinated an effort to collect and fill in, or discard, the ballots of Democratic voters who might have otherwise voted for McCready. Several of the affidavits come from elderly African American voters.

What could happen?  If the allegations are true Kevin Frey of Spectrum News says there could be a new election, “All 3 North Carolina congressional Dems issued a statement on the delayed certification of the #NC09 results: “… the Board should consider all available remedies, up to and including the conduct of a new election, to guarantee a lawful election outcome.”

2018 is never going to end, is it?
