SHOCKER: Democrats & Republicans Don’t Agree

I have to assume that the GOP legislature, who created this law, had to know this was going to happen.  Last week Governor Roy Cooper appointed 4 Republicans to the State Board of Election.  He also appointed 4 Democrats.  The current law says there are supposed to be 9 members of the board .  The ninth member is supposed to be independent.  This final member will be quite important as they will most likely be the tie breaking vote on controversial issues.  Not surprisingly, the Republicans voted for one person the Democrats voted for someone else…

Eight members of the board met Wednesday for the first time to nominate two people to become the ninth and final member. A law that took effect last week says Cooper now must pick one of the two — either former Supreme Court Chief Justice Burley Mitchell or A.J. Fletcher Foundation Executive Director Damon Circosta.

I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that Cooper is going to pick Fletcher (who was the Democrat pick).  This of course, will cause any decision by the board that is decided 5-4 in the Democrats favor to be challenged by the GOP and dismissed as partisan.  What exactly was the point of changing the makeup of the board if partisanship is still going to rule the day?
